Build A Bear

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Even before our house as amok with stuffed animals, I have liked Build a Bear. It is a great concept. The bears (and other animals) look good. Children like them.

When Yael was born, one of Esther’s friends gave Yael a Build a Bear gift card. The first thing I did was call Build a Bear and find out if the gift cards expire.

“Oh no, they do not expire.” Was the cheerful reply.

“Even for several years?” I asked again.

“Never.”

That made it easy. As Yael grew, we would periodically stop by Build a Bear at the Galleria. At first, it was no more interesting to her than any other store. As she got older, she started looking in side, then wanting to look inside.

Just after her second birthday, we took her in and let her walk on the ledge where she could see all of the bears. When she could choose one, and choose the same one over again, we decided it was time to let her make a bear.

As I have become a Build a Bear customer, I have come to appreciate the skill and friendliness of the staff. That first day was typical of every visit we have had. The staff member helped Yael with her bear. Yael found the stuffing machine a little scary. The staff member handled it without missing a beat. Yael gave her new bear a heart and a test hug. “Purple Bear” joined our household. Ok, two year olds are not the best at naming things.

Out at St. Louis Mills, there was a rip off of Build a Bear. Children made stuffed animals. They had birthday parties. They were staffed by high school rejects. They are closed now.

I have found Build a Bear to be a class act. We have been to both the stores at the Galleria and West County Center. The staff is always pleasant. The staff members seem to want to make children happy. It is a pleasure to walk into their stores.

Merav took advantage of the Winnie the Pooh inaugural week festivities and built her first Build a Bear on July 9, 2006. Yes she was a little young, but how could you go wrong with a Build a Bear Winnie the Pooh?

Update needed.

An update for 2015. We have more than a dozen Build A Bear Animals in the house now. They get slept with from time to time. We recently cleaned out several stuffies. None of the Build A Brears were even considered give aways.

Build-A-Bear Workshop is proud to be named to FORTUNE's 2012 "100 Best Companies To Work For".
